As a National Institutes of Health (NIH) translator, Douglas has spent the last 5 years applying his knowledge of foreign languages to help the NIH community communicate effectively internally and globally. His linguistic skills serve the essential goals of the NIH community whether they concern translations for record-keeping and security, treating foreign patients at NIH, leading-edge research in medical science or translations of historical scientific literature.
Douglas has a Master of Development Economics from Northeastern University and has attended Russian language training at Middlebury College, Indiana University, Leningrad State University, the Pushkin Institute at Moscow State University, Centre d’Etudes Russes, a Boston University Teachers of Russian program and Harvard College. He has taught Russian on the faculty of Bridgewater State College and at the Russian International Village of Concordia College. Douglas has translated and interpreted for the Russian Academy of Sciences (formerly, USSR Academy of Sciences), the Bolshoi Ballet Company, Russian business delegations, the governor of Washington State, a Seattle-based congressman and the chief of police of Seattle. Prior to joining NIH as a translator, he provided medical interpretation services for doctors, nurses, staff, patients and patients’ families at NIH’s central clinic.
Douglas is a very active member in good standing of the American Translators Association and attends annual translator conferences to continually keep abreast of changes in the field, including information technologies that manage the sundry translation challenges of this global profession.
While Douglas spent his early professional years helping to establish the Russian markets of leading French pharmaceutical companies and an American pharmaceuticals firm, his real passion for linguistics led him to a translator position he currently holds at the NIH Library.
