Library Privileges and Borrowing

The NIH Library is a biomedical research library whose collections and services are developed to support the programs of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and select U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agencies. 

  • Only staff within the NIH and select HHS agencies may borrow books or other materials, use resources, or request Library services.
  • All resources and services must be for government-related work.
  • An NIH ID card (your PIV badge) is required to access most resources and services.
  • The loan period for books is four weeks.
  • Journals and Reference books do not circulate.
  • The NIH Library has a renewal period of 14 weeks from the date of checkout.
